While having pain and swelling on the top of your foot may not be as common as some other foot and ankle injuries, there are many conditions that can directly or indirectly cause pain and discomfort on the top of the foot making everyday activities difficult or impossible. Top of the foot pain can radiate from other parts of the foot, so be sure to see your foot doctor for an accurate diagnosis.
Some of the more common causes of pain on the top of your foot include the following:
- Poorly fitting shoes—Footwear that is too tight can cause considerable pressure on the top of the foot causing pain, swelling, rubbing, and blisters.
- Foot fracture—Since each of your feet is composed of many small bones, dropping something heavy like your phone or laptop on your foot is a common cause of injury to the top of the foot, especially for the toes. Hairline fractures can be hard to detect and trace, so see your foot doctor.
- System-wide diseases—Systemic diseases including arthritis, diabetes, and peripheral artery disease cause pain and stiffness and fluid retention in joints and bones on the top of the foot.
- Hormonal changes—Pregnancy and menopause can create hormone imbalances that increase pain and swelling on the top of the foot.
- Getting older—Due to bone and muscle weakening as you age, top of the foot pain may be more frequent as you get older.
