Dr. Scott Nelson, DPM - podiatrist in Garland TX - Foot and Ankle Medical Clinic

Podiatrist in Garland TX

Dr. Scott Nelson DPM is a family-oriented husband and father who fosters a warm, friendly environment at his practice.

Dr. Nelson graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Independence, Ohio, in 2001. Throughout his four years of residency, he served the United States Government in the South Dakota Black Hills before completing a three-year surgical program in Denver, Colorado. When he isn’t treating patients at his small, close-knit practice, he enjoys hunting, fishing, skiing, and bicycle riding with his beloved wife and their three boys.

Dr. Nelson is well-versed in treating a wide variety of issues, and he is equally as knowledgeable about preventing a wide variety of serious issues. Because he is a big proponent of prevention, he spends time with each patient that he knows will benefit from being educated on preventative tactics and his reviews reflect this. For example, many diabetic patients need to monitor their foot health at home between doctor visits, so Dr. Nelson spends plenty of time providing them with prevention guidance so they can avoid severe foot and ankle conditions down the road.

Highly Rated Foot & Ankle Specialists Providing Comprehensive Podiatry Care

Both of our doctors at the Foot & Ankle Medical Clinic in Garland and the Foot & Ankle Medical Center in Wylie are not just skilled, board certified podiatrists – they are highly experienced, time tested, true foot and ankle specialists with a trove of stellar reviews from patients, peers and colleagues to back that up. They have put in years of dedicated work, earning the trust of patients of all ages and backgrounds. Their conservative, family-centered, patient-first approach to treatment is likely the reason why patients consistently tell us that they feel ‘heard’ during their visits. They feel that Dr. Nelson & Dr. Nguyen take time to listen & answer their questions. They also say they appreciate their thorough explanations of their treatment options. Another thing we hear patients say is how personal and attentive they feel their level of care is. The doctors call this compassionate care and both Dr. Nelson and Dr. Nguyen are committed to providing it to each of their patients.

Compassionate Care for All Patients

As part of this level of compassionate care, Dr. Nelson and Dr. Nguyen strive to use the least invasive treatment methods whenever possible. This may seem obvious – after all, who wouldn’t agree with “if you can avoid surgery, avoid surgery” – but it’s surprising how often invasive treatments are recommended before, or without, other options first. That said, there are circumstances when conservative treatment alone will not produce the desired outcomes and surgical intervention may be necessary.

The goal of the doctors and staff at Foot & Ankle Medical Clinic is the same today as it was when Dr. Nelson started this practice over 20 years ago – we want our patients to be able to move with comfort and confidence. Whether you come in for a toenail infection, or you are feeling instability in your foot or ankle, or perhaps you’ve sprained an ankle or fractured a foot in a recent sports injury, or maybe it’s an issue related to an athletic injury from the past… the podiatrists at Foot & Ankle Medical Clinic are dedicated to helping you achieve and maintain the best level of mobility possible.

Services We Provide

Custom Orthotics

Foot & Ankle Medical Clinic also offer Custom Orthotics – these are custom inserts that are molded to fit into your shoes and correct faulty biomechanics. Just as prescription eyeglasses correct your vision, Orthotics reduce abnormal motion while you walk or run, and equally disperses pressure on the bottom of your feet. Many of our patients not only receive relief from their foot pain, but also gain relief from their knee, hip and back pain. If you’re suffering with foot pain, come in for an evaluation to determine if you are a candidate for custom orthotics.

Laser Therapy / Nail Restoration

In addition to overall foot and ankle care, both of the Foot & Ankle Medical Clinic locations in Garland and Wylie TX offer laser therapy, and KeryFlex™ nail restoration to treat conditions of the toenailsingrown toenails, skin conditions, etc.

Conditions We Treat

Heel Pain

The heel bone is larger than any of the other 26 bones that make up the foot. Surrounding the heel are hundreds of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Damage or injury to any of the heel’s structures can cause pain and interfere with mobility. Plantar Fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a long, thick stretch of tissue that connects the bottom of the toes to the heel. When you strain or put too much pressure on the plantar fascia, it can lead to heel pain. Heel spurs are bony growths that can form on the bottom of your heel. They typically develop when the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that support the heel become strained. Heel spurs can be painful and sometimes only viewed on X-rays. Call the office at (972) 414-9800 or contact us online to request an appointment.

Ankle Pain

Broken bones, dislocations, sprains, contusions, infections, and other serious injuries can occur at any time. Early attention is very important. Whenever you have sustained an ankle injury, or you are feeling ankle pain, you should seek treatment from a podiatric physician quickly in order to avoid doing further damage. Call the office at (972) 414-9800 or contact us online to request an appointment.

Foot Pain

There are many different types of ‘foot pain’ and many different reasons that the pain exists. Achilles Tendinitis is the inflammation or irritation of the strong band of tissue connecting your calf muscles to your heel bone, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling at the back of the leg near the heel.

Toe Pain

Bunions, Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV), is a misaligned big toe joint that can swell and become tender. The deformity causes the first joint of the big toe to slant outward while the toe itself points to the smaller toes. The main reason for bunions is genetics – if your biological mother or father had bunions, the chances are pretty high that you might get them too. Bunions are aggravated by shoes that are too narrow in the forefoot and toes (such as high heels and Western Boots). Common treatment includes changing types of shoes and prescription custom molded orthotics. Surgery may be recommended to address the underlying cause of pain.

Hammertoe is a deformity of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th toes, where the toe is bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer and can be caused by improperly fitting shoes and muscle imbalance. Left untreated, hammertoes can become inflexible, requiring surgery. People may have corns or calluses on the top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe and feel pain in their toes or feet. Treatment typically involves shoes with roomy toe boxes and toe exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles. Call the office at (972) 414-9800 or contact us online to request an appointment.

Sports Injuries

Sports injuries involving the feet and ankles can result from sudden accidents, repeated impact or overuse during exercise and athletic activity. Podiatrists diagnose and treat conditions such as ankle sprains, stress fractures, heel pain, tendon injuries and joint instability. Treatment may include rest, bracing, physical therapy, custom orthotics or other options designed to relieve pain, restore movement and help patients return to activity safely. Call the office at (972) 414-9800 or contact us online to request an appointment.

Toenail & Skin Issues

There are all types of toenail problems – Ingrown toenails (which develops when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin – the condition is common in athletes, particularly those wearing ill-fitting footwear), Toenail Fungus (a serious condition that can lead to discolored, thickened, or crumbled nails which anybody can develop especially if you wear damp socks or spend time in saunas or locker rooms – it can lead to severe infection for diabetics), Clubbed Toenails (causes your nails to widen toward the top, like a club – condition is typically hereditary, but an underlying health condition like heart disease, lung disease, or cancer can also be the cause), etc.

Skin Conditions

Foot Warts and Plantar Warts are a skin condition on the feet caused by HPV, a virus that enters the skin though small cracks in the feet, infects & lives in the epidermis. Warts can be painful but most are benign. Corns or calluses are other skin conditions that we can treat.

Athlete’s Foot is a skin disease most commonly caused by a fungus called Trichophyton rubrum that grows in warm and damp environments inside shoes, that starts between the toes or bottom of the foot and can quickly spread to other areas of the body. Symptoms are dry, scaly skin, itching, inflammation and blisters. It’s not the only infection, fungal or otherwise, to afflict the foot – sometimes infections may be mimicked by a yeast infection. Our doctors can help diagnose the type of infection. Call the office at (972) 414-9800 or contact us online to request an appointment.
