September is Pain Awareness Month. This is a good time to try and understand some of the underlying causes of certain pains so we can help alleviate some of the discomforts they cause. Here are some of the most common types of foot pain, what they mean, and what you can do about it.

HEEL PAIN

Heel pain is very common and can have a variety of causes. One case is plantar fasciitis, this is heel pain that persists after adequate periods of rest. It can be inflamed and sensitive.

There are several solutions for heel pain. You can talk to your doctor about getting custom orthotics. These are custom inserts that are specially designed to the shape of your foot to provide cosigning and support exactly where it’s needed.

HEEL SPURS

These are abnormal growths of bone on the bottom of your heel. They can be caused by abnormal walking habits or wearing shoes that don’t fit properly.

To treat heel spurs, it’s important to wear shoes that fit and have adequate cushioning. Custom orthotics can help as well. Physical therapy can be a benefit.

STONE BRUISE

A stone bruise is a deep bruise on the bottom of your heel or ball of your foot. This can occur from stepping on an object or just from a hard impact on the ground. Usually, this type of injury will heal on its own and disappear with time.

While waiting for it to heal it’s a good idea to rest your foot. You can ice the area to ease inflammation. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with the discomfort.

If you are experiencing any foot pain, it’s important not to wait but contact an experienced specialist who can diagnose and treat the problem before it gets worse.
