Foot odor is a very common problem that is exacerbated by the sweating that occurs in your feet, even though the sweat itself has no odor. Bacteria and fungi love moisture and it is those microbes that are responsible for the bad smell from conditions like athlete’s foot and fungal toenails.

3 causes of smelly feet include the following:

1)    Sweat all by itself has no odor—Sweat isn’t the actual cause of smelly feet, but the bacteria in the sweat is another matter. As these microorganisms feed on your sweat, they produce the horrible smell. By drying out your shoes periodically and spraying them with anti-bacterial products, you can eliminate the source of much foot odor.

2)    Skin infections—Fungal and bacterial infections such as athlete’s foot and fungal nail infections are a major cause of foot odor.

3)    Excessive sweating—A condition called hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating of the palms, underarms, and the bottoms of the feet, contributing to the growth of odor-inducing bacteria.

Some tips to keep your feet smelling better include the following:

1)    Good hygiene—Wash your feet daily with an antibacterial soap to keep smelly bacteria from proliferating. Dry your feet carefully, and use rubbing alcohol to dry the area between your toes.

2)    Wear breathable footwear and socks—Shoes made out of breathable fabric such as Gor-Tex or canvas will help keep your feet dry. Also, wear moisture-wicking socks.
