Overpronation is a tendency to roll your foot inward when you walk. It is related to poorly supported arches. Those who have untreated flat feet tend to overpronate. The misalignment of the foot translates into improper ankle rotation with a radiating effect that can cause knee, hip, and back problems as well.

Some tips for determining if you have an overpronation problem include the following:

  • Check your wear pattern—The wear patterns on the bottom of your footwear will tell whether are not you are overpronating. If you have even wear patterns over the entire bottom then your gait is neutral. If the inner sole of the shoe and the big toe area show more signs of wear, then you likely have an overpronation problem.

  • Check to see if you have flat feet—You can determine if you have a problem with flat feet by wetting your feet and then standing on a dry surface to see the pattern the water leaves. If your footprint has no gap in the arch area, then your feet are falling all the way down and possibly causing overpronation

  • Other foot problems—People who overpronate also tend to have more toe deformities like bunions and hammertoes, as well as an increase in plantar fasciitis and peroneal tendonitis.
