Choosing shoes that are comfortable and supportive is essential to keeping your feet working at their optimum level. Wearing-properly fitted and supported shoes for the activity you are doing will help prevent injuries and will also improve your spinal alignment. This has beneficial effects for your knees, hips, and back as well.

Great tips for selecting the right shoes include the following:

  • Proper arch and ball support—Your footwear needs to provide the proper metatarsal dome support. This will help equalize imbalances over a wider area that includes the shallow arch in the ball of your foot. Proper dome support with orthotic inserts will help prevent problems like metatarsalgia and sesamoiditis. Good arch support treats many conditions including overpronation and plantar fasciitis.

  • Breathable fibers are better for your feet—Canvas and leather are flexible and breathable materials and will help your feet air out. Good airflow in shoes will decrease moisture and prevent blisters, rashes, and infections from fungi and bacteria.

  • Wide toebox and deep heel cups—Since your heel bone is curved, a deep heel cup will provide more support and stability. Having a wide toebox gives your toes plenty of room to move and helps prevent and treat toe deformities like hammertoes and bunions.

Have a computerized gait analysis done to determine your foot type and to find out which supports and shoes are right for you.
