Charles Darwin is famous for penning one of the most influential scientific books ever written. “The Origin of Species” set forth his theory of evolution based on natural selection. But did you know Darwin struggled with another problem? That’s right – smelly feet! In a letter written to a friend when he was only 12 yrs old, Darwin confesses, “I only wash my feet once a month at school, which I confess is nasty, but I cannot help it, for we have nothing to do it with.” Even geniuses struggle with foot odor.

CAUSES OF FOOT ODOR

Foot odor is usually caused by excessive perspiration and the growth of bacteria on the feet. Each foot has about 250,000 sweat glands. When this is combined with bacteria, foot odor can become a problem. The gasses rebased by bacteria growing on the soles of feet are similar to those related to bacteria used in making cheese.

HOW TO PREVENT FOOT ODOR

It can be an embarrassing problem but luckily fungal foot infections can be prevented by following a few easy tips:

  •  Keep your feet dry.
  • Wash and clean your feet daily.
  • Never go barefoot at the pool or in locker rooms.
  • Change your socks daily.
  • Use foot powder to absorb excessive sweat.
