As restrictions on movement and activities are lifting and as the weather warms, people are venturing out more and getting some sun, so what better time to raise skin cancer awareness. Even though skin cancer is unique in that the cancerous lesions are often visible on the surface of the skin, it is often overlooked. Tumors can look very much like other skin anomalies like warts and moles and they can also grow on the bottom of the feet or under a toenail where they can go unnoticed, so be sure to have regular visits with your podiatrist.

2 types of skin cancer that can grow on your feet include the following:

  • Melanoma—This is one of the most common skin cancers and when it is malignant it is one of the most aggressive and deadly that you can confront. Melanoma starts in the surface layer of the skin and is caused by excessive sun or UV light exposure. Cancer tends to grow inward instead of spreading over the surface which makes it harder to detect. If it reaches your circulatory system, it can metastasize throughout the body.
  • Squamous cell tumors—This type of cancer can present as bumps that look very much like warts. They can be itchy but usually don’t cause any pain.
