If you are experiencing pain and discomfort in the ball of your foot, it could be from a variety of issues. One common cause of pain in this area of the foot is metatarsalgia. This condition is caused by inflammation of the nerves that are in the ball of the foot near the metatarsal bones of the three middle toes. It can feel like you have a pebble in your shoe. There are a variety of other problems like bunions and hammertoes that can increase the likelihood of developing metatarsalgia.

3 risk factors for developing metatarsalgia and pain in the ball of your foot include the following:

1)    Being overweight—The ball of your foot is a high-pressure area that absorbs much of the weight when you walk and exercise. Being overweight adds additional pressure to your feet that can contribute to nerve conditions and many other problems.

2)    Having a stress fracture—Breaking or suffering a stress fracture in a metatarsal bone can also injure the nerves and cause pain in the foot ball area.

3)    Having toe deformities—People who have bunions and hammertoes are also more likely to develop metatarsalgia.
