A bunion is an often painful deformity that causes a large bony bump to form on your big toe. At first, the condition may not be painful, but as the bunion moves the big toe further into the other toes it causes blistering and problems with over and underlapping toes.

Bunions are largely an inherited condition, but they can be made worse by wearing poorly-fitting shoes that are too tight such as high heels. Having other foot problems like untreated arch pain or a foot injury can increase the chances of developing a bunion.

3 great ways to treat painful bunions include the following:

1)    Wear properly-fitted shoes—Always get properly fitted for shoes that have enough room in the toe area which will help avoid extra pressure and crowding on the toe joints. Custom-fitted orthotic inserts can be worn in your shoes to reposition the toes and stabilize the joints.

2)    Use splints and spacers—A specially fabricated night splint will pull your toe into position gradually over many months. Padding and spacers can be placed between the toes to keep them from rubbing against each other and help avoid blisters.

3)    Perform physical therapy exercises—Keeping your joints flexible with physical therapy exercises will help prevent stiffness and increase toe strength.
