An infected cut on the foot is a potentially dangerous complication in patients who have diabetes. Due to peripheral nerve damage, patients who have diabetes may not be able to feel any pain from cuts and injuries. The only way to tell if a wound has occurred is via visual inspection. Wounds that aren’t caught in time can become gangrenous and lead to amputation of a toe or even an entire foot in severe cases. If you have diabetes, make regular visits with your foot doctor to avoid and prevent complications.

Three simple tips to help you treat and prevent foot ulcers:

1)   Perform daily foot inspections—Checking your feet carefully every day is probably the most important step for diabetic patients to follow. Catching cuts before they worsen is essential. Be sure to check the bottoms (using a mirror) and between the toes.

2)    Keep your feet clean and dry—Wash your feet at least once per day with warm water and mild soap. Keeping your feet clean will help avoid bacterial and fungal infections. When you dry your feet, be careful to dry between the toes since moisture tends to get trapped there and infections can start.

3)    Wear the correct shoes with orthotic insertsWear the right diabetic shoes and custom made orthotic inserts that are specifically made for diabetic foot problems. They can divert pressure from wounds while they heal and can help prevent problems from starting in the first place.
