Dealing with peeling, itchy, burning, and smelly feet is what you have to look forward to when you get an athlete’s foot infection. The best way to prevent athlete’s foot is by limiting and avoiding contact with microbes in public places and at home. You can also decrease the duration and severity of infection with topical and oral medications that kill the microorganisms.
You can prevent athlete’s foot with the following tips:
● Protect your feet—Athlete’s foot fungus can be picked up from your environment and from other people, so preventing and treating contamination can avoid the condition. Don’t share shoes or foot care implements with others and protect your feet by wearing sandals or shower shoes whenever you are using public facilities like showers and locker rooms where microbes tend to proliferate. Spraying your feet and shoes with fungicide will help keep microbes from spreading.
● Use breathable socks and footwear—Footwear made of breathable materials like canvas and Gore-Tex will help moisture to evaporate. Using moisture-wicking socks will also help.
● Wash and dry your feet regularly—Keep your feet clean and as dry as possible. Let your shoes air out for a day or two and apply medicated powder to your feet and inside your shoes to kill microbes and reduce moisture.
