A neuroma is a growth of tissue around or near a nerve that inhibits proper nerve function leading to numbness, tingling, and pain. The ball of the foot is a frequent location of debilitating neuromas. The pain and tingling can also radiate to the toes and other parts of the foot. A neuroma has the same symptoms as other conditions such as capsulitis, so be sure to see your foot doctor for the right diagnosis and proper treatment. A physical exam and ultrasound or imaging studies may be needed to pinpoint the location of the neuroma.
4 treatments for debilitating foot neuromas include the following:
- Properly fitted shoes and arch supports—Properly fitted shoes with the right arch supports will align the foot and decrease pressure on the affected nerves.
- Orthotic inserts—Properly formed and placed custom orthotic shoe inserts are used to shift pressure away from the area to avoid further damage so that the nerve can heal.
- Steroid treatments—Steroids injected into the area are very effective at eliminating pain and tingling but may have side effects.
- Surgery—For growths that do not respond to conservative treatments, surgery may be required.
