Having a severe pain in the arch of your foot can happen suddenly. But arch pain may also start off intermittently, which can make it hard to identify the source of the problem without the help of your foot doctor.
Some of the reasons for arch pain include the following:
-
Structural problems
-
Trauma or overuse injuries that may cause fractures
-
Arthritis, gout, or other inflammatory conditions
-
Pulled or strained muscles, ligaments or tendons
-
Muscle stiffness
Treatments for arch pain include the following:
Wear shoes that are properly fitted and matched to the activity—Always wear the correct style of footwear for the activity in which you will be engaged. Don’t wear running shoes on the tennis court! Always replace your athletic shoes when they become excessively worn, usually about every six months.
Try custom orthotic inserts—Custom shoe inserts will provide the needed structure and support to not only fix your arches, but also to properly align your feet and ankles. Correcting your pronation will also help your knees, hips, and back.
Activity abatement or modification—Remove pressure by decreasing the weight on the arch with rest and elevation. Try switching to low-impact cycling or swimming while the arches heel.
