There are several foot problems that can cause pain in the ball of the foot. One of the most common of these is a condition called capsulitis. It is called this because it refers to the capsule that is created by the tendons, ligaments, and other tissues that surround your big toe at the base.
The pain is caused when ligaments become inflamed due to injury or disease. Abnormal foot mechanics and wearing shoes that don’t fit properly can contribute to this problem. Toe bending activities such as scrubbing a floor or climbing a ladder repetitively for your job can also be a contributing factor or cause.
People who have bunions, arthritis, an unstable arch, and tight calf muscles are more susceptible to developing capsulitis. If capsulitis goes untreated for a long time it may cause a dislocation of the toe.
When diagnosed and treated in the early stages, conservative treatments that involve stabilizing the joint and minimizing pain and inflammation are very effective.
These treatments include the following:
- Resting and taping—Taking the pressure off the ball of the foot is essential. Rest and avoid footwear that causes pain. Tape the involved toe to the next toe to help prevent movement.
- Orthotic inserts—Optimally-placed orthotic shoe inserts can help isolate the ball of the foot and relieve excess pressure to allow healing.
- Icing, Ibuprofen, and steroid injections—These can all help relieve inflammation and pain.
