A plantar wart gets its name because it grows in the plantar fascia, which is the wide band of fibrous tissue that spans the bottom of your foot. They are often large warts and, since they tend to grow under thick skin, they can be hard to identify and treat without the help of your foot doctor. Warts are caused by the ubiquitous human papillomavirus and can be spread by contact. To help avoid getting warts, be sure to protect your feet when in public showers and locker room areas.

Some signs and symptoms of plantar warts include the following:

1)    Pain and discomfort in the heel or ball of the foot—a painful bump may be the only visible sign. Plantar warts often occur where the pressure is greatest in the ball or heel areas.

2)    Warty, rough bumps— For visible warts, you will notice the rough bumps with tiny black points at the center. This is actually caused by blood clotting.

Plantar warts will sometimes dissipate on their own, but they can also become larger and more painful without proper treatment. Removal of the wart often requires debriding the thick skin with a special tool and application of acid or liquid nitrogen to dissolve the wart.
