Many factors need to be taken into consideration when diagnosing metatarsal syndrome which is why you should contact your foot doctor when you have pain in the ball of your foot. The condition can feel like having a small rock in your shoe under the base of the toes and it is caused by stress and inflammation around the toe joints. One contributing factor can also be the main cause but frequently there are two or more.

Some of the causes and contributing factors to developing metatarsal syndrome include the following:

1)    Morton’s neuroma—Neuromae are fibrous growths around nerves that can cause symptoms similar to metatarsal syndrome and also exacerbate the condition.

2)    Toe problems—Having bunions and hammertoes makes you more likely to develop metatarsal syndrome.

3)    Stress fractures—Tiny cracks in the bones of the toes (the metatarsal bones) can mimic metatarsalgia or make it worse, so see your foot doctor.

4)    Tight-fitting footwear—Tight-fitting shoes like high heels greatly increase the pressure on the ball of the foot which can lead to the development of the condition.

5)    Obesity—If you are carrying a lot of extra weight around you are more likely to develop metatarsal syndrome due to the added pressure on the ball of the foot area.
