There are a few problems with feet that occur regularly every summer. Here are some old the most common ones and what you can do about them.

ATHLETE’S FOOT

Problem: If you’re experiencing itchy or cracked skin, especially between your toes, you may have athlete’s foot. This is caused by a fungus that thrives in dark, wet places.

Solution: Always wear flip-flops or sandals around the pool, don’t wear other people’s shoes, and try to keep your feet washed and dry. There are powders and sprays available at most convenience stores if you do contract athlete’s foot. If symptoms persist, it’s a good idea to contact an experienced foot specialist.

FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES

Problem: With increased outdoor activity the possibility of injuries also increases. If you suspect any foot or ankle injuries it’s important to contact a podiatrist immediately.

Solution: Wear hiking boots for strenuous outdoor activity, be careful around slippery areas like pools or locker rooms, and avoid walking barefoot.

HEEL PAIN

Problem: Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. This is when your heel is inflamed and painful to the touch. There can be numerous causes, from increased stress on your foot from exercise to gained weight.

Solution: Make sure you wear properly fitting shoes with plenty of cushion. A podiatrist can offer custom orthotics that are molded to your specific foot shape to add support and comfort where it’s needed most.
