A fungal toenail infection becomes a more likely occurrence as you age and as your immune system slows down. While fungal toenails may not be initially painful, they can cause the nails to become brittle and discolored and a terrible smell often is caused by the fungi. The fungi that cause this infection are the same culprits that cause athlete’s foot infection and they are very common in public places. Always wear sandals and protect your feet in showers and locker room areas.

Treating and avoiding fungal toenail infections:

Depending on how advanced your fungal toenail infection has become, various treatments are available.

Laser fungal toenail treatmentAdvanced laser therapy is the cutting edge way to deal with a fungal toenail problem.

Antifungal medicines—Antifungal sprays and lotions can fight the fungi on the outside and you can take oral medications to attack them from the inside.

Debriding (sanding) of the toenail—Antifungals can be made more effective by sanding away the thickened nail so the meds can penetrate more effectively.

Nail removal—In severely advanced infections, the nail will need to be surgically removed so that the infection can be more directly treated. A new, healthier nail will grow back.

Avoiding fungal toenail infections:

Keep your feet protected in public areas and be sure to clean and dry your feet every day. Never cut your toenails too short and even keep them a little long to help prevent an ingrown toenail problem that can allow the fungi to get underneath your toenails.
