Your feet absorb an astonishing amount of stress and pressure every day. You perform a variety of ambulatory activities with many happening almost automatically or without your giving them a second thought—until you experience an injury to your feet or ankles that causes severe pain and makes it difficult or impossible to walk any more.

While your feet are awesome, most of us tend to take our feet for granted and they get abused and neglected on a regular basis. Take better care of your feet and have regular visits with your podiatrist to ensure that your feet will continue doing all the amazing things that you are used to!

Here are 5 fascinating foot facts that may surprise you!

  • Your feet have different lengths (and widths)—One of your feet can be as much as a half size larger than the other, and the widths can vary considerably based on conditions such as bunions and bunionettes. Get your feet properly measured and have your gait analyzed every time you buy new shoes or sneakers to ensure the best fit and function.
  • One-fourth of all the bones in your body are in your feet—There are 26 bones and 33 joints in each foot. In addition, each foot is comprised of over a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
  • Women tend to have more trouble with their feet—Females have almost four times as many foot and ankle difficulties as men. This can mostly be explained by the use of high heeled shoes and pumps that put extreme pressure on the feet with a resultant increase in conditions such as plantar fasciitisbunions, hammertoes, and ingrown toenails.
  • Your feet are made for walking—The average person will take between 8,000 and 11,000 steps every day, which equals enough steps in a year to walk all the way around the earth over four times.
  • Your feet can take almost twenty years to fully develop—From birth, it takes until the age of 18 or 19 for all the components of your feet and ankles to become completely developed.
