While the condition known as bunions is a very common foot condition, bunions develop very slowly, and many people either don’t notice or choose to ignore the problem. Waiting until the bunion has reached a more advanced stage is just postponing the inevitable treatment that is needed to bring it under control. Bunions are created by a misaligned big toe joint that is often due to poorly-fitting shoes. We know that shoes are a major contributor to bunion formation since, in the rare human populations that go shoeless, bunions are not a problem.

If you notice the beginning of a bunion bump forming on your big toe, here are 4 tips that can help alleviate the condition.

  • Stretching and flexibility exercises—Stretching and strengthening exercises can help to keep the big toe joint more flexible. Realigning the big toe into a straight position, and picking up small objects with your toes, are two great methods.
  • Don’t wear pumps or other tightly-fitting shoes—Painful corns can develop on top of the bunion, and these can become infected. Wear shoes with a wide toe box that won’t push your toes together.
  • Use bunion padding—Many padding and taping ideas are available to help isolate the bunion and treat or prevent bunion corns.
  • Custom orthotics and braces—Shoe inserts and braces are excellent for spreading the toes apart and preventing the bunion from pushing into the other toes.
