Paying attention to the health of your feet is something everyone should take more seriously. This is especially true for patients who have diabetes because the disease causes nerve damage that contributes to foot numbness. This lack of feeling makes it difficult to sense the pain of a foot or ankle cut or injury. The severe consequences of an infection — including the amputation of a toe or even an entire foot — may result.

4 foot care tips for patients who have diabetes include:

  • Always wear properly fitted shoes—Your footwear has to be comfortable and supportive. Keep in mind that there are specially-constructed shoes for diabetic patients that can improve stability and provide space for therapeutic orthotic inserts.

  • Perform a daily foot inspection—Check your feet daily and look for any cuts, scrapes, bruises, and blisters. Even small cuts that go unnoticed can lead to infection and amputation. If you have trouble seeing the bottom of your feet, use a mirror. Don’t forget to look between your toes for cuts and infections.

  • Wash and dry your feet regularly—Make certain to carefully wash your feet daily with mild soap and warm water. Dry carefully, especially between the toes since fungal and bacterial infections can hide there. Apply lotion to rough skin to help prevent cracks and bleeding.

  • Incorporate a daily exercise routine—Walking and other simple aerobic exercises are a great way to improve strength and flexibility and to improve blood circulation.
