While many developing kid’s foot issues will often correct themselves over time, you should still have your kid’s feet checked regularly by your foot doctor to make sure things are developing normally. Pay careful attention to the way your children are moving since they are often unable to properly verbalize any foot or ankle issues.

3 foot issues that are common in children include the following:

  • Warts—Since the virus that causes warts can be spread by contact, it’s no wonder that warts frequently affect kids. In the case of painful, hidden plantar warts on the bottom of your child’s feet, it’s best to see your foot doctor for skin and wart removal to help avoid bleeding and regrowth.
  • Sever’s disease—Growth plates in the bones of children are very active and sometimes the cartilage does not keep up with the growth of the bone, causing a painful condition like Sever’s disease in the feet or Osgood-Schlatter’s disease in the knees. Activities will have to be curtailed until the growth equalizes.
  • Ingrown toenails—Painful ingrown toenails are a frequent source of discomfort for kids. Be sure to have your child’s feet properly measured to get a good fit and to make sure shoes are not too tight. Tight-fitting footwear is a major cause of ingrown toenails.
