Bone spurs are bony growths that form on the heel. They grow slowly and may not cause noticeable problems in the beginning. However, as the bump gets larger, the protrusion can rub against your footwear causing blisters, pain, and gait abnormalities since the discomfort will often alter the way you walk. This can actually contribute to knee, hip, and back problems, so be sure to see your foot doctor to have spurs treated early.

3 factors that cause or contribute to bone spur formation include the following:

1)    Poorly fitting footwear—Sneakers and other footwear that cause excessive pressure and rubbing in the heel area should be replaced or avoided.

2)    High impact activities—Sports like basketball and tennis that involve high-stress impacts from jumping and running, as well as being on your feet all day for your job, can contribute to the formation of bone spurs.

3)    Diabetes complicationsBone spurs are more likely to occur and cause problems in people who have diabetes. Poor circulation and nutrient deficiencies can contribute to bone growth abnormalities.

Bone spurs that aren’t too large can often be treated with custom orthotic inserts that can isolate the area and decrease rubbing on the heel. Choosing backless shoes or sandals can also prevent any rubbing and painful blister formation.

If conservative treatments are not providing sufficient relief, surgery from your foot doctor may be necessary to decrease the size of the bony protrusion.
